1. Lower The Temperature
The average setting for hot water tanks is 140 degrees. Did you know that by reducing your heat by 20 degrees, it significantly lowers the amount of gas or electric power needed to keep the water hot?
2. Insulate Pipes
By insulating the pipes coming from the hot water tank 5 feet from the tank, this will also reduce the power needed to keep water hot when it goes through the pipes and will lower your utility bills.
3. Wrap an Insulation Blanket Around the Hot Water Tank
Wrapping an insulation blanket around the hot water tank can save heating money by slowing the drop in temperature from the hot water tank when water is not being used and cycled through. Insulation blankets are available at most home improvement stores.
4. Clean Out the Tank
Hot water tanks accumulate calcium buildup and must be emptied and the coils also cleaned to keep them running efficiently.
